Modern Origami is accessible to everyone. I will show how traditional origami has evolved from the well-loved crane to today's form by leading two hands-on origami classes to fold, manipulate and assemble paper into usable containers and or decorative spheres. During the morning session, participants will learn how to interpret diagrams illustrated by modern origami designers by folding several practical boxes and containers. In the afternoon, each participant will weave together 30 sheets of paper into a dodecahedron ball, a subset in modern origami know as modular origami.

Saturday morning session (2 hours) "Practical Origami Containers" I will teach participants how to interpret diagrams illustrated by modern origami designers from folding several practical boxes and containers. I will discuss where to find online resources for origami diagrams, videos, book reviews and paper.

CANCELLED! Saturday afternoon session (2-3 hours) "Modular Origami: Dodecahedron" Each participant will fold and assemble 30 sheets of 6" (15cm) square paper into a woven dodecahedron ball. I am teaching a subset in modern origami called modular origami. By assembling the 30 unit dodecahedron the participant will engage the left (logic) and right (creativity) brain hemispheres.

SPRING ART FESTIVAL 2010 (Holualoa, Big Island)

This was my first time teaching in Holualoa. The hosts at the Donkey Mill Art Center was very gracious and made me feel welcomed. There were close to 200 attendees, both kids and their guardians. Among the many hands on activities like doll making, clay making, paper making, I hosted an origami teaching table with teachers Yuni "Unique" Kawawake and Daniel Sheinfeld. We folded Makoto Yamaguchi's 3D modular star, pipe cleaner flower, airplanes, cootie catcher, Won Park's flat tulip & traditional leaf, index card jumping frog and Yami Yauchi's Spinner printed with Bennett Arnstein's Spiral Graphics. This was my first time teaching in Hilo. I had a great time introducing the community to modern origami. I was at Hawaii Japanese Center (751 Kanoelehua Ave.) teaching modern origami models such as Yami Yauchi's Spinner with Bennett Arnstein's Graphic Spirals (available for purchase on lulu.com), pipe cleaner flowers, magazine cover box and Paul Jackson's Swimming Fish (published in Origami Zoo). At the end of the day, I was teaching super simple triangle sailboats. One of the volunteers at the Hawaii Japanese Center kindly offered me a tasty chocolate nougat filled mochi, very modern flavor, yum!

There was martial arts demonstration, taiko drumming, spray-on tattoos, mochi pounding and koi flag making. Thank you for hosting my origami table.

More than 50 origami artists worldwide, including many members of Origami USA volunteered many hours to fold several hundred origami sea creatures on the 2009 origami holiday tree titled "The Sea Around Us: Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the 50th Statehood." Deb Pun Discoe created the 30 piece Omega Star tree topper.
